I Deleted most of the OP.

Made many developments in terms of 3x3 doors, and this thread has turned more into a 3x3 door mini-forum. Its a pretty neat community, post if you have a 3x3 you want to share!

In the meantime, here is a tutorial and schematic for my 3x3.

The whole thing now measures 7x4x9! :)

    Heres the schematic for v3
    Heres the tutorial:

UPDATE: The whole thing is 3 wide now, now measures 7x3x9! :D

Also, check out our super compact 2x2 and 3x3 hidden doors:

Looks like you are off on the width. Should be 7x5x10. Including the blocks repeaters on the bottom layer sit on.

Cnb's 3x3 is pretty similar in size and includes a TFF. I believe his wiring is 8x8 underground and basically minimum space used above ground. Looks like to hide your wiring it may be a block thicker on one side than cnb's.

my bad, I meant the double extender system on the bottom fit into a 6x5 area. Also, I figured that if you're gonna be building this you're gonna have a sizable wall to hide the wiring.

Edit: i just measured CNB's, and his measures at 8x8x11, measured in the way you measured mine.

Oh just double extender then cnb is probably the place to look again.

    3x5:

Double extender meaning the whole bottom system, with the taker piston and the double extension. For the record, the actual double extender this is based on is MCA's 3x3 version.

So there are two version of the base, the tutorial will have both. On measures 6x5, the other 7x5 but the 7x5 is more flexible shapewise.

How fast is the open circuit?

I tried to make a fast circuit and have it opening in 1.2 seconds.

    These are cool doors!

But claiming it to be the smallest is a nice challenge. :)

Spent this evening trying to come up with a smaller version, found one that measures 7x11x4 (including the floor the lowest wires sit on), does it count?

    ....

    Here's the schematic.

Shamelessly stole Peppe's idea of a compact control circuit for a double extenders. ...

Nice stuff Zhul. Avoiding block updates to the bottom piston is no easy task.

Instead of most compact I went for speed and 1 wide above ground ;)

Tried to sync up open/close with the movement of the last block. The close is 1 game tick off, but the open i got synced at i think 1.2 seconds.

    Schematic:

    Default ~1.3 seconds to open.
    http://www.mediafire.com/?zyrnngqragqlznc
I tried in several directions and sometimes you can remove 1 tick from the longer delay orange lines repeater orange lines, and the 5 tick lime green path down to 4 ticks. Doesn't seem to be linked to any direction - probably just block update order. Only 1/10 second difference, but if you want 1.2 to open i guess it takes some block update order luck.

    More Shots:

You can make the height when covered shorter if you use a trapdoor/fence gate instead of a powered rail.

Control circuit is centered and would fit directly under the door and be covered by 1 block thick wall and first block of a floor level with the door. 5 wide x 11 long x 11 high (trapdoor/fence-gate) 12h powered rail.

mine's 7x5x10 :P my friend and I are working on making it 7x5, we have a single torch and a single block making it 5 lol
good work! It gave me a few ideas.
EDIT: I'm working right now, i only need to get the double extender to work

I don't know about smallest bro, but yeah. You could just put pressure plates near the door and have redstone run offs that lead to torches and go around either side. It's a lot more compact.

    sometimes you just gotta build!

    JUST COMPACTED! its now 7x4x10!

Hey, so I decided to hop on the bandwagon and get you guys the schematic. Here you go:
    Schematic

btw Peppe, I downloaded your door and I must say I'm impressed. Same with Zhul, although i think his timings could be modified a little.

4x10? Nice! This one and Peppe's speedy one will be hard to improve.
    Hmm, who want's to try 3x12 (because 36 < 40)? ;)

my friend actually wanted to make it 3 wide, lol. He's trying to make a 3 wide 4x4 door!

Here's mine. It measures 4x7x10 and is faster than CNB's for reference. I'll have a video up with it soon.

Looks like 10 high still as some of those repeaters on the bottom are sitting on ground level. If it was floating in the air you would need that 10th layer for the repeaters to sit on.

Didn't know that! I guess mine is just as small as the other one.

I'm not quite sure how to, but the video will include a tutorial.
